"Thinking can never answer its own ultimate 'Why?' because each answer only generates a new 'Why?'"

By the way, ask Nathan about monkey ecsema.  Also, ask him which coffee is good to the last drop.  And finally, tell him I'm still looking for the concave areas of tree sap and the shadowed areas of soap.

I very much appreciate the comment you left at my Xanga with the excellent commentary on the problem and solution of sin.

Then why think? Perhaps because for every question that is raised, certain other things are ruled out and thus our degree of circumspection is likewise increased. Perhaps also because in the asking of "Why?" we gradually become more and more emptied of ourselves and must in humility admit we do not know, turning in faith to the One who does. The intellectual act of comprehending that things are larger than we are makes us humble.

Actually, don't think. That's an order.

So, what do you think about all of that sentry?

If mathematics has taught us anything, claims Kurt Gödel, it is that a lower level of logic cannot be proved except by a higher level of logic. But once we reach the higher level of logic, it cannot be proved except by a higher level of logic yet still. Thinking cannot ultimately answer its own "Why?" without reference to that which is higher than itself, without that which gives it meaning. And that which gives it meaning cannot be found purely at the level of thought itself: it must come from a place more deeply within. Thus, the thinker gives meaning to thought, but the thinker is more than thoughts. What is more, the thinker is more than a thinker: the thinker is a human being with depths unknown to the rational mind. But if ultimate meaning is given to the human being himself, it must come from a higher order yet still: it must be conferred from without rather than manufactured within.

What if we didn't ask why?

And Fishtree, I agree with what you - well, with what I think you are saying ;) The lesser must yield to the greater. And the why is greater, because with each answer we come closer to the root of truth and all that is.

Why do we want to know?

And please, don't say "because" we have already gone down that road.

Because.........we want to know the story behind the story, the truth behind the things we believe we know, the reality from which the truth has been derived.

How do we know if we are actually telling the truth about reality or have simply arrived at our conclusions another way?

BreathofDawn:  "How do we know if we are actually telling the truth...?"

Lately I think there is a combination of assurances concerning truth.  In Romans 1 Paul the apostle  writes,

"since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.  For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities- have been clearly seen being understood from what has been made so that men are without excuse."

The world, the very nature of the world, seems to testify of an Intelligent Designer, since complex systems are always indicators of intelligence.  But it seems to me, that the way this evidence is clearly seen is through faith.  So, I'm not sure we can count on having a knowledge that is proveable, outside of faith.  Since Truth is a person, it seems it must be experienced~ how do you convince someone of an experience?  I can say, God Himself has proven to me, over and over again, by very evident means, that He is there, that Christianity is truth.  How do I know~ it has been revealed to me by  supernatural means.
